# Getting started with API Keys

> Some tips to get you making your first requests

### Accessing the API

This guide is for clinics, or corporate groups that own the data.

The API is available through the `connect.vetcove.com` domain. You will need to use Vetcove's Clinic Dashboard to generate one or more API Keys for your organization before you can start making requests. Make sure to give your token scopes representing the data you want to be able to access.

### Generating an API key

To generate an API Key, you can access the API Keys section by selecting the `API Keys` tab in the side bar. There you can create/edit/view your API Keys. When generating a new key, be sure to copy it to a safe place, as once you exit out of the created page, you will **no longer be able to access the value of this key (apart from a couple of characters at the beginning and end of the key for identification)** and neither will the Vetcove Dev Team.

### Authentication

All requests to the Connect API must include an `Authorization` header whose value is `Bearer `, followed by your API key. For example, if your API key was `api_test_************`, you would set the `Authorization` header to `Bearer api_test_************`.

### Content types

The Connect API always accepts JSON in request bodies and returns JSON in response bodies.

### Examples

```bash curl theme={null}
curl https://connect.vetcove.com/ext/v2/clinics/ \
     --header "Authorization: Bearer api_test_************"
```

```python Python theme={null}
from pprint import pprint
import requests
session = requests.Session()
session.headers.update({"Authorization": "Bearer api_test_************"})
response = session.get("https://connect.vetcove.com/ext/v2/clinics/")
response.raise_for_status()
pprint(response.json())
```
